Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui has emerged as a transfer target for both Manchester United and Arsenal, with both clubs seeking a reliable goalscorer ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Retegui has been in sensational form, netting 20 goals in Serie A so far this season – a historic achievement, as he becomes the first player in Italy’s top flight to reach that milestone by this stage of a campaign.
His prolific scoring places him firmly in the European Golden Shoe race alongside Mohamed Salah (22) and Harry Kane (21).
Given his form, it is unsurprising that the 25-year-old has attracted interest from major clubs.
Manchester United’s attacking options, Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee, remain developing talents, while Arsenal have struggled to find a consistent striker since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s decline following his lucrative contract extension in 2020.
According to Foot Mercato, both Premier League sides have already initiated contact with Atalanta, while Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain are also reportedly monitoring the striker’s situation.
Retegui’s rise has been remarkable. Just a year ago, he was playing in Argentina before Genoa signed him from Boca Juniors, following a successful loan spell at Tigre.
He made an immediate impact in Serie A, scoring seven goals in his debut season.
Notably, he had already been called up to the Italian national team – qualifying through his Sicilian grandfather – before even making the move to Europe.
Atalanta saw potential in the forward and secured his signature for €28million, a move further motivated by Gianluca Scamacca’s long-term knee injury.
That decision has paid off handsomely, as Mateo Retegui has delivered consistently for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.
The striker remains under contract with Atalanta until 2028, meaning any transfer will likely require a significant fee.
