Manchester United tipped for shock move to bring back David De Gea

Manchester United are reportedly considering a surprise move to bring David De Gea back to Old Trafford this summer.

The Spanish goalkeeper enjoyed 12 largely successful years at United before his contract expired in the summer of 2023.

Having played a pivotal role in the club’s most recent Premier League title-winning campaign in 2013, De Gea consistently proved to be one of the club’s standout performers during the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

No player in United’s illustrious history can surpass De Gea’s record of being named Player of the Season on four occasions.

At the time of his departure, it was generally accepted that De Gea’s peak had passed, but according to reports from SPORT, the Red Devils now “regret” that decision.

The report suggests that United are planning to offer De Gea a new contract once his one-year deal with Fiorentina expires this summer.

The Premier League club is said to have lost confidence in Andre Onana, the goalkeeper who replaced De Gea in 2023, and are expected to sign a new shot-stopper this summer.

Whether David De Gea would return to the starting role or serve as an experienced backup to Onana remains uncertain.

Given his impressive performances for Fiorentina, the 34-year-old may demand a first-team spot.

Fiorentina have certainly been impressed with De Gea’s displays.

“The intention is to keep players like De Gea and [Nicolo] Fagioli, but I don’t want to say more,” said Fiorentina owner Rocco B. Commisso in a recent interview with SkySports24.

“We’ll see if they also want to stay, so we can start next year with an even stronger team.

“It’s true that we’re not the first, second, or third team in Italy, but what we have, we defend.

“I don’t need those who come and tell me they are the strongest or the ‘kings of Italian football’ to take who they want.

“That won’t happen with me.” English footballing royalty may have more luck.
