Memphis Depay has issued a public apology after being sentenced for drink-driving, an incident that took place last August in Monaco.
The former Manchester United forward has been handed a four-month suspended prison sentence after being convicted of “dangerous driving.”
The incident occurred when Depay, having left a nightclub, chose to drive his Rolls Royce.
He was stopped by police and subjected to a breathalyser test, which revealed his blood alcohol concentration to be 1.01 grams per millilitre, surpassing Monaco’s legal limit.
As a result of the conviction, Depay has been ordered to pay a €9,000 (£7,500) fine, serve a four-month suspended sentence, and face a two-year driving ban in Monaco.
“I would like to come on here and apologise,” Depay said on Instagram after the judgement was revealed.
“Last summer during my holidays in Monaco I made a mistake and decided to drive home after having some drinks in a restaurant.
“I should’ve got in a taxi instead but I didn’t so I would like to apologise and want to take full responsibility for my action. 2024 was a year of lessons and I will definitely learn from this one. 2025 we will do better. Memphis.”
Memphis Depay, now 30, has experienced a career full of highs and lows since emerging at Dutch club PSV.
After making his mark in the Eredivisie, he moved to Manchester United in 2015, where his time in the Premier League was underwhelming, scoring just two goals before being sold to Lyon.
Depay then found success in France with Lyon, further solidifying his reputation as a talented forward.
In 2021, he made a high-profile move to Barcelona, though his time at the Camp Nou was marked by inconsistent performances.
Seeking more regular first-team opportunities, he joined Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid for a season before leaving Barcelona.
In October, Depay made the switch to Brazil, signing with Corinthians, marking the latest chapter in his unpredictable career.
