Mohamed Salah reacts after Liverpool beat Southampton to go eight clear

Mohamed Salah expressed his delight after a crucial second-half brace secured Liverpool a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Southampton on Sunday.

The win extended the Reds’ lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points.

Liverpool initially led through Dominik Szoboszlai’s opener, but Southampton responded with goals from Adam Armstrong and Mateus Fernandes, leaving the visitors trailing just past the hour mark.

Salah equalised with a composed finish from Ryan Gravenberch’s assist before sealing the win in the 83rd minute with a clinical penalty, ensuring a vital three points for Arne Slot’s side.

“Very important, especially when we were 2-1 down,” Salah told Sky Sports post-match. “I’m glad we managed to win the game, that’s the most important thing.

“Each game is different. They have a game plan, they played very well and they managed to score early [in the second half] but we also managed to come back in the game and win the game.

“I think we had a good game plan, we tried to play our game and I was confident we were going to have chances. The only focus in my head at that time was to focus on using the opportunities to score.”

“It’s [a] great [feeling],” Mohamed Salah said of his team’s position. “Hopefully we keep going in this direction.

“We have a game against [City next] so hopefully we win it and go ahead [of them] more, 11 points.”

The Egyptian added: “Man City is Man City – they had a bad time now but they are going to strike back. They have a great coach, great players. Hopefully we can beat them and go further [ahead].”
