Newcastle United target Matheus Cunha as summer reinforcements take shape

Newcastle United have identified Matheus Cunha as one of their top transfer targets ahead of the summer window, according to a new report.

The Magpies are pushing to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League, knowing that a top-five finish will guarantee them a place at European football’s elite table.

Regardless of where they finish in the Premier League, it’s already been an outstanding season for Eddie Howe’s side.

Victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final ended the club’s 56-year trophy drought.

Much of Newcastle’s success can be attributed to the regular goalscoring of Alexander Isak.

However, Isak’s remarkable form, with 24 goals in 35 appearances, has not gone unnoticed.

His performances have placed him at the top of striker shortlists for clubs like Liverpool, Arsenal, and Barcelona.

The Daily Mail reports that Newcastle is increasingly confident Isak will stay at St James’ Park. With that in mind, the club’s focus has shifted to strengthening their attack even further this summer.

Cunha, who has a £62.5m release clause in his Wolves contract, is reportedly among the players Newcastle are considering.

The Brazilian forward is also a known target for both Manchester United and Arsenal. Cunha’s versatility is a major factor in Newcastle’s interest – he can play multiple attacking roles.

At Wolves, Cunha has often played as a striker or in a No. 10 role behind Jorgen Strand Larsen, but he’s also capable of operating as a traditional winger, an inside forward, or as a No. 8 in a three-man midfield.

One advantage Newcastle may have in securing Cunha is the presence of Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton – two of Cunha’s international teammates.

The pair’s positive experiences in the North East, coupled with their strong relationships with the club’s fans, could help convince Cunha to make the move.

However, completing a deal will not be straightforward.

Manchester United’s interest in Cunha stems from disappointing individual seasons for Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee, both of whom may need to prove their worth at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Arsenal has been long in search of a central striker to compete with Kai Havertz for minutes.

Isak’s potential price tag could steer Arsenal toward Cunha, who, despite only signing a new contract with Wolves in February, is eager to take the next step in his career with a move to a bigger club.
