RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande clarifies earlier remarks about ‘dream club’ Liverpool

The 19-year-old has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s breakout stars this season for RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande has opened up on the advice he has received from Jurgen Klopp, while also clarifying his earlier remarks about Liverpool being his “dream” club.

The 19-year-old, who has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s breakout stars this season for RB Leipzig, raised eyebrows in November when he revealed he was “a big fan of Liverpool” and had one dream: to “play at Anfield.”

His comments sparked further discussion. However, Diomande has now clarified his stance in an interview with Bild, explaining that the connection to Liverpool largely stems from his father’s passion for the club and the iconic atmosphere at Anfield.

“People made it out to be my dream club, but first and foremost, it’s my dad’s favourite club,” Yan Diomande said.

“It was always his great wish to see me play there someday because he loves the atmosphere at Anfield.

“He always raved about Steven Gerrard. I was too young to see him play, and we didn’t even have a TV at home for a long time.

“I have a lot of respect for Liverpool, but my dream club right now is Leipzig.”

Those remarks are consistent with his earlier explanation that fulfilling his father’s wish would also represent a personal dream.

While the admiration remains clear, the winger appears keen to emphasise his commitment to Leipzig, especially with his contract running until 2030 and growing interest from Europe’s elite.

Interest is not limited to Spain, with Bayern Munich also reportedly monitoring the Ivorian, who has registered nine goals and six assists in 24 appearances this season.

Still, the winger insists he is fully focused on his development in Leipzig and has not held talks with any other club.

Klopp, now serving as Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull, has remained a guiding figure for the youngster.

While he has not discussed Liverpool directly with Diomande, the former Reds boss has offered regular advice.

“He tells me to stay humble and keep working hard,” Diomande said. “It was always my dream to play on one of his teams.

“That’s not quite possible now, but being so close to him, talking to him, shaking his hand, it’s incredible. He’s a legend.”
