Real Madrid’s interest in William Saliba considered ‘feasible but very difficult’

Real Madrid’s pursuit of Arsenal centre-back William Saliba has been described as “feasible but very difficult,” with the French international remaining a long-standing target for the Spanish giants.

Since breaking into Arsenal’s first team in 2022, Saliba has emerged as one of the best defenders in world football.

His absence through injury during the crucial run-in of the 2022/23 season is widely believed to have played a key role in the Gunners falling short in the Premier League title race.

Madrid are in the market for a central defender this summer, having missed out on Leny Yoro last year after refusing to match Manchester United’s sizeable offer to Lille.

Injuries to key defenders Eder Militao, David Alaba, and Antonio Rudiger at various points have further highlighted the need for reinforcements.

Despite their global stature, Real Madrid have not heavily invested in central defenders in recent years.

That financial restraint could make signing Saliba particularly challenging, especially given the size of the potential transfer fee.

However, reports suggest that Saliba himself would be open to a move.

According to L’Équipe, Saliba is Madrid’s top defensive target, with a move in either 2025 or 2026 considered the most realistic option.

The Spanish club believe they can appeal to Saliba by offering him the chance to become a long-term leader at the heart of their defence and to reunite with his close friend and compatriot Kylian Mbappé.

While L’Équipe notes that Saliba remains committed to Arsenal, Real Madrid are thought to be the only club capable of tempting him away, as they are still regarded as the pinnacle of club football.

Encouragingly for Arsenal fans, the report adds that William Saliba has no desire to leave the club in contentious circumstances.

Arsenal have already offered the 23-year-old a new contract, but with his current deal set to enter its final two years, the situation is one to watch closely.

Should no extension be agreed by 2026, the Gunners could be forced to reassess their stance, especially after seeing Liverpool lose Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer under similar conditions.
