Roman Abramovich still harbours resentment over being forced to sell Chelsea, according to former Blues midfielder John Obi Mikel.
Abramovich acquired the London club in 2003 and invested hundreds of millions of pounds to transform Chelsea into Premier League title contenders and two-time European champions.
However, his reign ended in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The UK Government faced pressure to impose sanctions on Roman Abramovich due to his alleged ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, leading to the freezing of his assets
Subsequently, Chelsea was sold to Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital just months later.
More than two years after the sale, Abramovich reportedly remains bitter about the ordeal. According to Mikel, who played under Abramovich’s ownership, the Russian oligarch still feels aggrieved about the situation.
Speaking on his Obi One podcast, Mikel shared that he had spoken with people close to Abramovich about the matter
Mikel said: “It’s just unfortunate what happened: he lost the football club. I still speak to people close to him and it still pains him. He’s still angry about what happened.
“He’s not happy that he lost his ‘baby’ because Chelsea Football Club was his football club.
“He really cared about the football club, not just the players but the fans.”
