Tim Steidten leaves West Ham after January transfer window closes

West Ham have confirmed the departure of recruitment chief Tim Steidten, just hours after the closure of the January transfer window.

The Hammers, who suffered a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Monday night, stated that Steidten is leaving to pursue new opportunities.

This move comes after the appointment of new head coach Graham Potter, who brought in his own transfer specialist, Kyle Macaulay.

Additionally, chairman David Sullivan had taken a more hands-on role during the January window, which saw the club secure the loan signing of striker Evan Ferguson from Brighton.

“West Ham United Football Club can confirm that technical director Tim Steidten will be leaving the club. Tim has been instrumental in our recruitment efforts.

“With the arrival of our new head coach Graham Potter, who has brought in his own head of recruitment, it is time for Tim to pursue new opportunities.

“We would like to thank Tim for his dedication and hard work and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

Steidten joined West Ham in 2023 after successful spells at Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen.

During his time at the club, West Ham spent nearly £250m on new signings.

However, his tenure was not without challenges, as a number of his acquisitions struggled to make an impact.

His relationship with former managers Julen Lopetegui and David Moyes soured, with Moyes even banning him from the club’s training ground towards the end of last season.

Steidten was also reportedly asked to stay away during the final weeks of Lopetegui’s brief reign, though this was denied at the time.

When Lopetegui was dismissed in early January, it seemed that Steidten’s time at the club had come to an end.

The appointment of Potter effectively sidelined him, and Sullivan increased his involvement in transfer matters.

Potter’s long-time colleague, Kyle Macaulay, is now overseeing recruitment.

West Ham’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Monday left them in 15th place in the Premier League, with a comfortable cushion above the relegation zone.

Potter, who has had an unfortunate start to his return to the Premier League, will be given the rest of the season to assess his squad, with a focus on pushing for a top-half finish next season.
