Tottenham have registered their interest with Cody Gakpo’s representatives but are yet to make contact with Liverpool or begin formal negotiations, according to The Athletic.
Liverpool have no intention of selling the Dutch forward, although they would assess any offer in the context of other major transfers this summer, including Elliot Anderson’s move to Manchester City and Morgan Rogers’ switch to Chelsea.
The Reds are also keen to strengthen their attack rather than weaken it, while new head coach Andoni Iraola has yet to work with Gakpo.
Although Gakpo endured an inconsistent campaign last season, his goalscoring instincts remain evident. Only seven wide players averaged more touches in the opposition penalty area than his 2.2 per 90 minutes in 2025-26.
He also ranked among the league’s top 10 for chances created and shots from open play, outperforming every Tottenham player in all three metrics.
Gakpo would add a clinical edge to Spurs’ attack. While technically gifted, Tottenham’s forward line has often lacked a consistent goalscoring threat.
His clean striking technique and intelligent movement into the penalty area make him a constant danger, even if his finishing was below his usual standards last season.
His willingness to attack the back post and occupy dangerous positions is one of his greatest strengths, reflected in his strong numbers for box threat, shot frequency and advanced involvement.
For Liverpool, losing both Gakpo and Mohamed Salah in the same transfer window would significantly weaken their attacking threat from wide areas, making it understandable why they are reluctant to sanction a sale.
While some supporters criticised Gakpo for repeatedly cutting inside onto his right foot, he demonstrated with the Netherlands at the World Cup that he is capable of adding greater variety to his game.
For Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi, Gakpo’s movement and versatility would provide a valuable solution, with the Dutchman capable of playing both on the left wing and through the centre if injuries strike Spurs’ forward line again.
