Trent Alexander-Arnold may return from injury for Merseyside derby

Trent Alexander-Arnold could make his return from injury for Wednesday’s Merseyside derby, but Liverpool will be without Joe Gomez when they face Everton at Goodison Park.

Alexander-Arnold has been sidelined for the Reds’ last two matches, while Gomez was forced off early during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Plymouth Argyle in the Emirates FA Cup.

Slot made 10 changes to the team that had thrashed Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 at Anfield last Thursday, securing a place in another Carabao Cup final for the reigning holders.

The game against Plymouth might have played out differently had Joe Gomez, who was captaining the Reds, not been forced off early due to injury.

Gomez’s withdrawal meant Wataru Endo had to drop into the centre of defence, leaving the midfield inexperienced and ultimately unable to match their more seasoned opponents.

During his pre-match press conference on Tuesday morning, Arne Slot said: “Trent has done parts of training sessions with us.

“Not ‘sessions’, a session, yesterday.

“So, let’s see how he is today. He will train, hopefully, with us again and then we have to decide if we take him to the game, yes or no.

“Joe, it’s the same leg where he had the injury last time. We are still assessing that but he will definitely not be available tomorrow.”

When asked if it is a concern that Gomez’s issue is in the same leg as the injury that ruled him out of 10 matches prior to his comeback at Home Park, Slot replied: “That’s mostly a concern.”

A victory over Everton would see the Reds move nine points clear of second-placed Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.

It would also help to erase the memory of Sunday’s shocking 1-0 FA Cup exit at the hands of Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle.

While the loss was undoubtedly embarrassing, there was context behind it.
