Osasuna winger Victor Munoz has completed a medical after Liverpool triggered his £34.5million release clause.

Newcastle United had been pursuing the Spain international, but Liverpool have once again beaten the Magpies to a key target, having also won the race for Hugo Ekitike last summer.

Munoz is expected to sign a six-year contract, with the transfer fee set to be paid in two instalments.

Liverpool’s long-standing interest in Munoz intensified following the arrival of head coach Andoni Iraola, who is well acquainted with the player through his extensive knowledge of La Liga.

Currently away with Spain at the World Cup, Victor Munoz completed his medical in the United States on Wednesday after Liverpool staff travelled to carry out the necessary checks.

The Spanish Football Federation granted permission for the winger to finalise the formalities of the move.

Victor Munoz joined Barcelona‘s La Masia academy at the age of 11 before moving to Real Madrid‘s youth setup in 2023.

Current Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso handed the winger his La Liga debut in May 2025, introducing him as a substitute for Vinicius Junior against Barcelona.

Munoz signed a five-year contract with CA Osasuna that summer and went on to make 34 league appearances last season, scoring six goals and registering two assists.

Newcastle United believed they had secured a deal for Victor Munoz before Liverpool swooped in to sign the Osasuna winger.

The Magpies had seen a £33.3million offer accepted by Osasuna, comprising an initial £29million plus £4.3million in add-ons. Personal terms had also been agreed, while agent fees were settled and plans were being put in place for a medical in the United States.

However, Newcastle were asked by the player’s representatives to wait over the final 24 hours of negotiations.

Liverpool had been in discussions throughout the process rather than entering the race at the last minute, but Newcastle had been led to believe that Munoz’s preference was a move to St James’ Park.

The collapse of the deal has left Newcastle searching for answers after another transfer setback involving Liverpool, following previous disappointments in pursuits linked to Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.

Despite completing a deal for Munoz, Liverpool’s search for attacking reinforcements is not over. The Reds are still interested in Yan Diomande, who remains their leading wide attacking target this summer.

The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international is expected to be difficult to sign, however, given strong interest from several of Europe’s top clubs and RB Leipzig’s determination to tie him down to a new contract. The Bundesliga side are understood to value him at more than £86million.

Liverpool entered the summer determined to add greater flexibility to their forward line following the departure of Mohamed Salah, and Munoz fits that profile perfectly. While he is most comfortable operating from the left flank, he is capable of playing on either wing and through the middle.

As well as offering versatility, Munoz brings directness and pace – two qualities Liverpool identified as priorities heading into the transfer window.

His arrival will provide Andoni Iraola with greater tactical flexibility and improve the squad’s ability to cope with injuries, while also increasing competition for places across the front line.

Liverpool also view his versatility as a positive in the development of Rio Ngumoha, with the club believing Munoz’s arrival should not limit the youngster’s pathway to first-team football.
