Virgil van Dijk signs new two-year deal with Liverpool

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has signed a new two-year contract, extending his stay at Anfield until 2027.

The 33-year-old centre-back was previously set to become a free agent at the end of the current season.

However, he has now followed in the footsteps of Mohamed Salah, who penned a two-year extension last week, by committing his future to the club.

Van Dijk, who has made 314 appearances for the Reds, was appointed captain in 2023 after the departure of Jordan Henderson.

The Dutchman remains a key figure at the heart of Liverpool’s defence as the club continues to shape its future under new leadership.

“It was always Liverpool,” said Van Dijk, who had been linked with a move to Paris St-Germain.

“That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan and it was always Liverpool.

“There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family.

“I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling.

“It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible.

“The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I’m so happy.”

Virgil van Dijk has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s success since his £75 million move from Southampton in January 2018.

Since arriving at Anfield, the Dutch defender has played a crucial role in helping the club secure major honours, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Club World Cup, and two EFL Cups.

Now playing under compatriot Arne Slot, who is in his first season as Liverpool manager, Van Dijk remains a key figure in the squad.

His leadership and defensive prowess have been instrumental as the Reds push for a record-equalling 20th English league title.
