Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has been tipped to “thrive” at some of Europe’s top clubs, including Barcelona, Real Madrid, or Bayern Munich, should he leave the Premier League leaders this summer at the conclusion of his contract.
The 33-year-old delivered yet another commanding performance on Wednesday night, helping Liverpool cruise to a 4-0 victory over Tottenham in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
Virgil van Dijk capped off the win with a goal, sealing an emphatic result for the Reds.
This latest display is just another chapter in what has been a stellar individual season for the Dutchman, who continues to prove that his best years are far from behind him.
Van Dijk has played a key role in helping Liverpool surge nine points clear at the top of the Premier League, while also topping the Champions League standings and securing a spot in the Carabao Cup final for the second consecutive year.
His impressive form holds even more significance, as his contract with Liverpool is set to expire at the end of the season.
While no agreement has been reached for an extension, an offer is expected, but Van Dijk revealed after the Tottenham win that he has “no idea” what the future holds.
Given the situation, some of Europe’s biggest clubs are reportedly eyeing the opportunity to sign one of the world’s top defenders on a free transfer.
His former Southampton teammate, Jose Fonte, believes Van Dijk would have no trouble slotting in at a club like Barcelona, Real Madrid, or Bayern Munich, all of which have been mentioned as potential destinations.
“Van Dijk would thrive at Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, and I would not be surprised to see him at one of those clubs next season,” Fonte told Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo.
“I would not be surprised to see him at one of those clubs next season because those clubs will be looking for defenders as reliable as Van Dijk, and everyone will be watching if he reaches the end of the season without signing a new contract.
“He can still play at the highest level and has shown that he can take care of himself.
“He will have no problem maintaining that level for three or four more years.”
