Dominik Szoboszlai says Liverpool need to “wake up” after they were booed off the pitch following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham.
The 25-year-old put the Reds ahead with a sensational first-half free-kick, and Arne Slot’s side looked set for a vital win until Richarlison scored a 90th-minute equaliser for Spurs.
Boos and jeers were heard around Anfield at full-time as Liverpool supporters voiced their frustration at failing to beat a Tottenham side currently battling Premier League relegation.
When asked about Liverpool fans booing, Szoboszlai told Sky Sports: “I didn’t hear the boos but we can understand them because last season we became champions but this season we are not performing in a way we should be.
“But I think they should stand behind us because last season, when we were champions, four games before the end everybody was happy so support us when we are in a difficult time.”
Liverpool would have moved level on points with fourth-placed Aston Villa and within three of third-placed Manchester United with a win over Tottenham.
Although the Reds moved a point above Chelsea and up a place in the table with the draw, they missed the chance to strengthen their position in the race for a Champions League spot.
Szoboszlai has urged his teammates to improve, warning they could otherwise be left settling for a place in the Europa League or even the Conference League next season.
“At the end we have to wake up because there are eight or nine games left to go and if we keep going like this, next season we should be happy to play (in the) Conference League,” Szoboszlai continued. “If I knew the answer, then I would probably tell the guys and we would change it. I don’t know, honestly I don’t know.”
