Alexander Isak is set to be sidelined for several months after it was confirmed that he suffered a leg fracture during Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
The striker has already undergone surgery following an MRI scan carried out on Sunday.
The Sweden international sustained the injury after being caught by Micky van de Ven when he opened the scoring in the victory in North London.
Isak had only been on the pitch for 11 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute before he was forced off.
He was replaced by Jeremie Frimpong and helped from the pitch by members of Liverpool’s medical staff, including Dr Jonathan Power and Chris Morgan.
Further scans on Sunday confirmed the severity of the injury, and an operation was completed on Monday to address an ankle issue that included a fibula fracture.
Liverpool have placed no official timescale on Isak’s recovery, but it is understood the £125million forward is expected to be out for a number of months.
The news comes as a major blow for head coach Arne Slot and his squad, who are currently enjoying a six-game unbeaten run in all competitions and have climbed to fifth in the Premier League ahead of Wolves’ visit to Anfield on December 27.
Slot is due to speak to the media on Tuesday morning to preview the fixture and is expected to provide a more detailed update on Isak’s condition.
Isak joined Liverpool on September 1 following a British-record move from Newcastle United, having missed much of pre-season due to the prolonged and contentious nature of the transfer.
After completing an individually tailored fitness programme, the 26-year-old was then sidelined for a month with a groin injury sustained in the 5-1 Champions League win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
