Divock Origi has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31.
The former Liverpool striker confirmed on Monday that he is bringing an end to his playing career after more than a decade in the professional game.
A product of Genk’s academy, Origi joined Liverpool from Lille in the summer of 2014 before spending a further season on loan with the French club. He arrived at Anfield in 2015 and enjoyed a promising first campaign, scoring 10 goals despite an injury-hit season.
The Belgian added 11 goals the following year as Liverpool secured a return to the Champions League before spending the 2017-18 season on loan at Wolfsburg.
Although opportunities became limited upon his return, Origi cemented his place in Liverpool folklore during the 2018-19 campaign.
His dramatic stoppage-time winner against Everton at Anfield reignited his Liverpool career before he played a decisive role in the club’s historic Champions League triumph.
Divock Origi scored twice in Liverpool’s unforgettable 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the semi-final second leg and then sealed a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in Madrid.
He remained an important squad player as Liverpool went on to win the Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and League Cup during his time at the club.
By the time he left Anfield in 2022, Origi had made 175 appearances and scored 41 goals for the Reds, securing his status as one of the club’s most memorable cult heroes.
Following his departure, he joined AC Milan and later spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Nottingham Forest. He left the Italian club in December before deciding to call time on his career.
At international level, Origi earned 32 caps for Belgium and scored three goals.
Origi posted on Instagram: “My purpose in the game as a player is fulfilled ⭐ I lived out my childhood dreams to play on the biggest stages and win the biggest trophies. I am grateful to God for all of it.
“To my fans across the world who helped me shine: every iconic moment, every goal, every piece of history we made together will forever be ours.
“To every club, and all the coaches and teammates who stood beside me, thank you. You shaped me in ways that go far beyond the pitch.
“Representing Belgium, my nation, while carrying Kenya, my roots, was a joy. And to my family and those closest to me… without you, I am not who I am today. I am forever grateful.
“The mission is complete. Now I step into my next calling. More of the journey to come… With love, Divock Origi.”
