Dominik Szoboszlai is determined to “step up” and “be an example” for Liverpool as he targets success for the club in the seasons ahead.
The Hungary captain recently committed his future to the Reds by signing a new long-term contract and is currently one of the senior figures on Andoni Iraola’s pre-season tour of the USA.
Liverpool have won both of their opening tour games, beating Sunderland 4-2 in Nashville, with Szoboszlai on the scoresheet, before a 1-0 victory over Wrexham in New York.
The Reds will conclude their US tour against Leeds United at Soldier Field on Sunday, with Szoboszlai speaking to the media ahead of the fixture.
“The training centre is amazing. I think everything is here what a football player needs,” Dominik Szoboszlai said of the squad’s two-week stay in Chicago.
“The city, as much as we could go outside for a little walk, maybe a coffee, is very nice. The places are nice as well. The people are very friendly. So yeah, I’m happy to be here.
“I think the two games [so far] were maybe a little bit different than the game that’s going to be played in Chicago [versus Leeds] because obviously we have Ryan [Gravenberch], Flo [Wirtz] and Alex [Isak] back, who played a big role last season as well and the season before, I mean Ryan.
“I’m looking forward to it and hopefully we can be even better than the last two games.”
Asked by the press about agreeing fresh terms to remain with the Reds, the No.8 replied: “I’m very happy. I said it before.
“Actually, it was a long way until we got over the line but I’m happy to sign a new deal. Hopefully I can stay as long as both sides want and win everything that is possible, as I said when I signed here first.
“I’m saying the same things [when] I signed now. I want to win everything that is possible, achieve big things and just be there for the club.”
A new phase has begun following the appointment of Iraola as Liverpool’s head coach ahead of the 2026-27 season.
There has also been significant change within the squad, and Szoboszlai – entering his fourth campaign at Anfield – is eager to take on greater responsibility and play a leading role.
“A couple of club legends left the club, but I think the club is still the club it has been always. So, one of the biggest clubs in the world,” he said.
“So now someone left, someone came, we have to step up, we have to be an example for the younger generation maybe. I’m not saying I’m old but I try to be also an example on the pitch, off the pitch.
“I try to help everyone. And I think many players think in the same way like I do and we want to be successful all together.”
