The January transfer window has only been open for a matter of hours, but Liverpool have already confirmed their first piece of business. The Reds have announced that James Norris has completed a permanent move to Shelbourne.

The 22-year-old defender had been on loan with the League of Ireland Premier Division side since February, during which he made 45 appearances.

The transfer brings an end to Norris’ long association with Liverpool. A Scouser, he joined the club’s academy at under-nine level and progressed through the ranks to earn two senior appearances.

His first-team debut came in December 2019, aged just 16, when he played the final 10 minutes of a 5-0 Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Aston Villa.

That appearance made James Norris the fourth-youngest player in the club’s history to feature for the first team. With Jurgen Klopp and his senior squad away at the FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar, Liverpool – managed by Neil Critchley – were forced to field their youngest-ever starting XI.

Norris’ second and final appearance for the first team came in January 2022, when he was introduced in injury time during a 4-1 FA Cup third-round victory over Shrewsbury Town at Anfield.

The left-back, who has represented England at Under-19 level and previously spent time on loan at Tranmere Rovers, was named on the bench four times for the Reds last season.

Several academy and fringe players are expected to be considered for loan moves during the January window, including Trent Kone-Doherty, Rhys Williams, Kieran Morrison and Calvin Ramsay.

However, injuries within the senior squad make it unlikely that teenagers Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha will be allowed to leave this month.

A club statement read: James Norris has completed a permanent transfer from Liverpool FC to Shelbourne.

“The 22-year-old had been on loan with the Irish Premier Division side since February.

“A Scouser who joined the Reds’ Academy at U9 level, Norris departs having made two senior appearances for the club. He was named on the bench for Liverpool four times last season too.

“The versatile left-sided player has been capped by England at U19 level and his career will now continue with Shelbourne.

“Everyone at Liverpool FC wishes James the best of luck for the future.”
