Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo for £85million, according to The Times.
The 27-year-old has decided to join City after opting against a move to Tottenham Hotspur, with talks now taking place between all parties to reach an agreement.
Cody Gakpo started and provided an assist in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest on Saturday. His potential move comes after Liverpool reportedly finalised a deal to sign Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.
City, who have seen Savinho and Omar Marmoush leave for Tottenham this summer, have also agreed a €40m (£34.3m) deal to sign Palmeiras winger Allan Elias.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola said earlier this week that he “cannot guarantee anything” regarding Gakpo’s future.
Iraola said: “When the market is open, you cannot guarantee anything with anyone. We don’t know who will arrive.
“Cody is playing very well for us. He’s been very good since he came from the World Cup. I’d like to know how the market finishes, but at the moment I don’t know what’s going to happen.
“I can smell who we’re going to sign and what positions but experience shows you that if there’s an opportunity on the last day, you think: ‘If it’s going to improve us, then let’s take it’.”
Gakpo scored 18 goals and provided seven assists in 49 appearances during Liverpool’s 2024-25 Premier League title-winning campaign before signing a new five-year contract in August 2025.
He joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in December 2022 for an initial £37m, potentially rising to £44m with add-ons. The Netherlands international has since scored 50 goals and provided 23 assists in 180 appearances for the club.
