Xabi Alonso has emerged as a candidate to become Chelsea’s next manager, with reports suggesting the Spaniard is open to the move, although no final decision has been made.
Alonso has previously been linked with Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp’s departure, but the Reds ultimately appointed Arne Slot in 2024.
Despite recent speculation from Spain over Slot’s future, reports in England suggest Liverpool are not considering a managerial change.
According to journalist David Ornstein, Liverpool “fully intend” to keep Slot as head coach next season, with Alonso “not under consideration at all.”
Instead, Chelsea are now exploring a move for the former Bayer Leverkusen boss. Miguel Delaney also reports that Alonso believes his style of football suits Chelsea’s current squad.
Chelsea are also considering other candidates, including Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva, as they look to replace interim boss Calum McFarlane.
While Xabi Alonso remains a highly-rated option across Europe, Liverpool are instead expected to back Slot in the transfer market this summer, particularly by strengthening the wide attacking areas.
Ornstein said: “Liverpool will want to recruit for Arne Slot this summer, in particular in the wing positions.
“I would expect one or two to come in, and they think that will be crucial. And once they have come in, that’s when perhaps you can judge Arne Slot more fairly.”
