Inter Milan have agreed a £30m (€35m) deal with Liverpool for Curtis Jones. The deal was agreed late on Wednesday night, with Jones given permission to travel for a medical.

Jones’ move to Inter will bring an end to his 16-year association with Liverpool, having joined the club’s academy at the age of nine.

The 25-year-old made 228 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 22 goals, and won two Premier League titles, two Carabao Cups, the Club World Cup and the FA Cup. He also finished as a Champions League runner-up in 2022.

The transfer agreement includes a 10% sell-on clause for Liverpool. Inter had previously seen a €25m (£21.7m) verbal offer rejected in June, with Liverpool valuing Jones at around £35m.

The Serie A champions had also explored a loan move in January, but that proposal was turned down.

Curtis Jones made 49 appearances in all competitions last season but started just 18 Premier League games as he struggled to secure a regular place in midfield under Arne Slot.

He is understood to have been keen on a new challenge in Italy, with Liverpool willing to sanction the move despite new manager Andoni Iraola wanting him to stay.

“I rate Curtis very highly,” Iraola said after taking charge of Liverpool. “He’s Scouse, he’s from here.” Jones will become the third England international to join Inter this summer after John Stones and Djed Spence.

His departure leaves Liverpool without a Scouser in their first-team squad and could provide an opportunity for 19-year-old Trey Nyoni to step up after impressing during pre-season.

For Liverpool, the £30m package represents good value given Jones had only one year remaining on his contract and the deal also generates immediate profit on a home-grown player.
