Ruben Amorim set to “operate on a more modest budget” than Erik Ten Hag at Man United
Amorim’s main focus will be on maximizing the untapped potential within the existing group
Ruben Amorim, Manchester United’s new head coach, is expected to focus on extracting the best from the current squad, rather than pursuing a complete overhaul.
Following his appointment as Erik ten Hag’s permanent successor, Amorim will lead United for the first time when they face Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Sunday.
Speculation has been rife over the past few weeks about potential signings, particularly players from Amorim’s former club, Sporting CP, with whom he enjoyed success.
While new additions are anticipated in future transfer windows, they won’t be aimed at building an entirely new squad.
According to The Daily Telegraph, Amorim is set to work with a more modest budget compared to Ten Hag’s, who was given significant backing, with 21 new permanent or loan signings made over five transfer windows at an estimated cost of nearly £600million.
Previous managers, including Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, also benefited from hefty investment in the squad.
However, Amorim’s main focus will be on maximizing the untapped potential within the existing group, with the goal of ending the cycle of costly, frequent overhauls.
The club’s new sporting hierarchy believes the current squad is capable of achieving more, with several players thought to have higher potential that has yet to be unlocked.
This includes experienced stars and players who may thrive in new roles under Amorim’s coaching.
Key players such as Rasmus Højlund, who has shown flashes of promise without consistent results, and Mason Mount, who has struggled to make an impact when fit, are among those expected to benefit from Amorim’s approach.
Marcus Rashford, who had a disappointing 2023/24 season following a 30-goal campaign the previous year, will also be hoping to rediscover his form.
Meanwhile, Joshua Zirkzee has yet to prove his worth after his summer move, and young talents like Alejandro Garnacho, Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo, and Leny Yoro will require careful nurturing as they develop at this crucial stage in their careers.
