Liverpool Champions League winner Dietmar Hamann has criticised Mohamed Salah’s performance in the Reds’ 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven, while also weighing in on manager Arne Slot’s future at the club.
The Premier League champions were humbled at Anfield in their latest group stage fixture on Wednesday night.
Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s only goal, briefly bringing the home side level before PSV struck three times in the second half to secure a commanding victory.
The defeat marked Liverpool’s third consecutive three-goal loss, with the team conceding 10 goals across those matches.
Hamann, reflecting on the result, highlighted why he expected Slot to make more changes to his side.
Alexander Isak was left on the bench in favour of Hugo Ekitike leading the line, while the only other adjustment saw Giorgi Mamardashvili replace Alisson Becker, who missed the match due to illness.
The former Liverpool midfielder specifically criticised Salah, suggesting the forward should have been rested for the clash against PSV.
Hamann also raised questions over Slot’s position, indicating that the Dutch manager faces growing scrutiny following another heavy defeat at Anfield.
“I thought Salah might be one of the first one to be dropped,” Dietmar Hamann told RTE Sport. “And then I said to myself, ‘I’m not sure because he needs him’.
“Now he [Slot] has got a decision to make. Do you get the sack with Salah or do you keep your job without him?
“What Salah did for that second PSV goal, that was the time Slot had the chance to take him off straight away because what he did there was disgraceful.
“For a player of Salah’s calibre it pains me to say that because he is the guy that has been carrying the team for the last seven or eight years.
“But what he did in letting the player, Mauro Junior, get past him, without doing anything to help the team.”
