Liverpool are in talks to sign Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Reds are exploring a late move to reunite head coach Arne Slot with the Dutch right-back, whom he previously worked with at Feyenoord.
Liverpool are in the market for a wide defender after Jeremie Frimpong suffered an injury, while Conor Bradley has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai filled in at right-back during Saturday’s 4-1 win over Newcastle, which ended Liverpool’s five-game winless run in the Premier League.
However, Romano reports that Liverpool have now made initial club-to-club contact with Sunderland over Geertruida.
Romano wrote on X: “EXCLUSIVE: Liverpool, in talks to sign Lutsharel Geertruida as new defender. Initial contacts took place with Sunderland as Arne Slot knows him well since Feyenoord times. #LFC in club-to-club negotiations.”
Geertruida joined Sunderland on loan from RB Leipzig earlier this season and has made 17 Premier League appearances, including 10 starts.
The 25-year-old only moved to Leipzig from Feyenoord in the summer of 2024 and could be set for his fourth club in two years.
Slot relied heavily on Lutsharel Geertruida during his time at Feyenoord, handing him 127 appearances. The defender scored 16 goals and registered nine assists under the Liverpool head coach.
