Liverpool sound out potential move for Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries
Reports suggest the Reds have explored the possibility of signing Dumfries, who is capable of operating at right-back or in a more advanced role

Liverpool have reportedly sounded out a potential move for Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries as they contend with an injury crisis at right-back.
The Reds are currently without both Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley. Bradley has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after sustaining a serious knee injury during Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal earlier this month.
Frimpong, meanwhile, is expected to be sidelined for several weeks after suffering a groin injury in the 6-0 Champions League victory over Qarabag.
The Netherlands international has already endured two hamstring issues this campaign, meaning he will need to be carefully managed upon his return.
With the transfer window set to close on Monday, sections of the Liverpool fanbase are keen to see head coach Arne Slot dip into the market.
Reports suggest the club have explored the possibility of signing Dumfries, who is capable of operating at right-back or in a more advanced role.
The 27-year-old is currently recovering from an ankle injury and has made 15 appearances for Inter this season, scoring three goals.
Denzel Dumfries has a release clause that can be activated in the summer, though it is not valid during the January window.
Italian journalist Nicolo Schira claims Inter would be open to selling the defender for around £21million (€25m), despite him being under contract at the San Siro until 2028.
Schira wrote on X: “Liverpool have talked with Denzel #Dumfries’ agents to explore the conditions for a possible signing. #Inter ask €25M to sell the right back, who has changed agent in the last weeks to join Ali Barat’s Agency.”
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed Liverpool’s interest but played down the likelihood of a deal this month.
Speaking on YouTube, Romano said: “Liverpool asked about the situation of Dumfries. His release clause (approximately €20m–€25m) is not valid in January; it’s only valid in the summer.
“The understanding is that Liverpool asked about the player and the injury situation. At the moment, Dumfries is expected to be out for around 10 to 20 days, so it shouldn’t be a long one.
“Liverpool got this information, but they didn’t send any bid and didn’t start negotiations. My understanding is that Liverpool would only consider this possibility on a loan deal, and Inter don’t want to do a loan deal for Dumfries. So, at the moment, there is nothing in it — it’s just club-to-club conversations.”
Meanwhile, Inter are also believed to have enquired about Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones. The academy graduate, whose contract at Anfield runs until the summer of 2027, has made 29 appearances in all competitions this season and has recently been linked with Tottenham Hotspur.
Romano added: “Inter spoke to Liverpool [on Friday] about Curtis Jones. Tottenham were very aggressive on Curtis Jones at the beginning of the transfer window before signing Conor Gallagher.
“Now Inter ask for Jones — a loan with an option to buy for €40 million, with a paid loan and salary covered. Inter want it, but at the moment there is no answer yet from Liverpool. They haven’t given the green light.
“It’s not an easy one for Inter, and it’s on Liverpool to decide. They have an emergency situation with players, so it’s on Liverpool.”
