Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet is set to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed move to Liverpool this summer, according to The Athletic
The 20-year-old is expected to sign a contract running until 2031, with the option of a further 12 months.
He is scheduled to arrive in the north west of England on Monday to complete his medical. The deal will be worth £55 million plus £5m in add-ons, with personal terms not expected to pose an issue.
Liverpool previously targeted Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi last summer, but a £35m deadline-day move collapsed and the England international joined Manchester City in January. The Reds now view Jacquet as a stronger long-term fit within their recruitment model.
The France youth international is seen as a key part of Liverpool’s next-generation rebuild, following the summer arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Alexander Isak. Chelsea were also in talks with Rennes for Jacquet earlier this year.
Jacquet has been a regular for Rennes this season, starting every Ligue 1 match he has been available for and playing every minute prior to his red card against Paris Saint-Germain in December. He previously impressed on loan at Clermont Foot and had attracted interest from Arsenal before they signed Cristhian Mosquera.
Liverpool’s interest is heightened by injuries to Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni, which have reduced their centre-back options beyond Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, whose contract expires next summer.
