Jeremy Jacquet, however, took part in the session, providing Andoni Iraola with a defensive boost ahead of the weekend clash.
The Reds return to action after three weeks away when they welcome Premier League leaders Manchester City to Anfield, with both sides looking to make a strong statement.
Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo were forced to cut their respective international breaks short after suffering ankle and thigh problems.
Iraola confirmed earlier this week that both forwards were facing a race against time to be fit.
“I think Alex Isak and Cody Gakpo both have had to leave the national teams with injuries,” Iraola told beIN SPORTS earlier this week.
“Now it’s a matter of if they are going to recover in time to help us in the next game or not. But right now they are both injured.”
Gakpo was injured in a challenge by Sasa Lukic during the Netherlands’ 2-1 win over Serbia, while Isak was sent back to Merseyside after Sweden manager Graham Potter described his issue as minor.
Both players’ absence from Thursday’s session at the AXA Training Centre has cast doubt over their involvement in Sunday’s highly anticipated encounter with Enzo Maresca’s side.
The pair have made significant contributions under Iraola, registering six goals and five assists between them.
Their potential absence would represent a major blow for the Liverpool boss as he looks to maintain the Reds’ unbeaten start and hand City their first defeat of the campaign.
