Alexander Isak set to resume training ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Manchester City

The striker has missed the Reds’ last four matches after sustaining an injury during the away fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt

Alexander Isak will return to training today as Liverpool prepare for their Premier League showdown with Manchester City.

The striker has missed the Reds’ last four matches after sustaining an injury during the away fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday morning, head coach Arne Slot confirmed that Isak is close to making his comeback and could be in contention for Sunday’s squad.

“He will train for the first time today with the team again, after being three weeks out,” Slot replied.

“I know that I said three weeks ago that his pre-season has ended so now it’s time for us to see where he is.

“But I have to come back to those words, because if you are three weeks only with the rehab, that doesn’t bring you back to the levels he was three weeks ago.

“Although, our rehab team is doing an incredible job.

“But you cannot compare rehab with games of football or training sessions with the team.

“As much as we try to replicate it, that’s simply not possible.

“So, again I have to say, give him some time.”

Elsewhere on the injury front, Slot revealed that goalkeeper Alisson Becker is expected to be available immediately after the upcoming international break, which follows the clash with City.

However, Jeremie Frimpong’s recovery will take a little longer, with the defender not expected to return until after Liverpool’s meeting with Nottingham Forest on November 22.

Slot said: “Alisson for sure and I expect Jeremie back after the international break as well because we play from November until March!

“But I don’t expect Jeremie to be fully fit for Forest, but with Alisson we expect this.”
