Andoni Iraola has described Joe Gomez’s injury as the “worst news” of Liverpool’s pre-season tour so far but expects Jeremy Jacquet to be available for the final match of the club’s United States trip against Leeds United on August 2.
Joe Gomez captained Liverpool in Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Sunderland at GEODIS Park in Nashville but was forced off after just eight minutes with an injury.
The extent of the problem remains unclear, although the experienced defender was able to walk off the pitch before being replaced by Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who partnered fellow teenager Mor Talla Ndiaye in central defence.
“Probably the worst news has been straight away the injury of Joe,” Iraola said.
“We were happy because we were going through training without losing any players and unluckily for us we’ve lost Joe straight away.”
Summer signing Jacquet was not involved against Sunderland as Liverpool continue to manage his workload following shoulder surgery that ended his previous season in February.
Following the win, Iraola confirmed Gomez’s injury was the biggest setback of the tour but revealed he is hopeful Jacquet will be fit to feature against Leeds United at Chicago’s Soldier Field next Saturday.
Iraola added: ” With Jeremy we decided to take it easy with him.
“He’s had a lot of months without playing with his shoulder injury, he’s been training very well, but we’re going to take it easy with him.
“He will play probably in the last game of this US tour, he will have time to have minutes, but we were kind of happy, but we’ve lost one now.”
