Arne Slot confirms Alexander Isak will make debut v Atletico Madrid

Isak is in contention for his first appearance in a Liverpool shirt

Arne Slot has confirmed there is “definitely a chance” Alexander Isak will make his Liverpool debut against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

The Swedish striker, who joined from Newcastle United on deadline day, was not involved at the weekend as the Reds secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Burnley.

However, Isak is now in contention for his first appearance in a Liverpool shirt as the club kicks off their Champions League campaign with the visit of Atletico Madrid to Anfield.

“There is definitely a chance, because he is in the squad,” Slot told his pre-match press conference, when asked about the likelihood of Isak featuring in the game.

“Then there is a chance to play. Normally I would say 99.9 per cent sure, but I can say it’s 100 per cent sure he will not play 90 minutes. But he is part of the squad.

“It is already a Champions League game to look forward to but if people look forward to his playing time, that could mean that could happen tomorrow as well.

“The only thing that is sure is he will not play 90, and all the rest you will see tomorrow.”

Curtis Jones, who missed Sunday’s win at Burnley, will remain sidelined for Liverpool’s clash with Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.

“He will train with the team tomorrow so hopefully he is able to be in the squad on Saturday,” said Slot. “But not for tomorrow yet.”
