Arne Slot hints Liverpool are open to strengthening squad in January

The Dutchman's only signing last summer was Federico Chiesa

Arne Slot has not ruled out the possibility of Liverpool strengthening their squad during the January transfer window.

The Dutchman’s only signing last summer, Federico Chiesa, has struggled with injury, making just three appearances so far and not featuring since September.

Liverpool have been hit by a wave of injuries, with Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas, Conor Bradley, and Ibrahima Konate all sidelined, joining Chiesa on the injury list.

Slot has emphasised that he expects most of his injured players to be back before the January window opens.

However, he acknowledged that this won’t stop Liverpool from exploring potential deals behind the scenes.

Despite the injury setbacks, Slot expressed satisfaction with his current squad, having overseen a flawless start to his Anfield tenure, with the Reds winning 18 of their first 20 matches.

Liverpool currently sit at the top of both the Premier League and the Champions League tables.

Arne Slot also pointed to the £30m signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili as an example, with the goalkeeper set to join from Valencia next summer.

He suggested that Liverpool would be ready to take action should any further opportunities arise when the transfer window opens next month.

“We are having discussions every day, no matter if there is a window coming up or not,” said the Reds head coach, whose side travel to Newcastle United on Wednesday.

“We always talk about the team, which players we like, which players are maybe not in the best place.

“Fortunately we talk more about the ones that do well because almost all of them do really well.

“Yeah, it’s a bit of a worry that three defenders are out at the moment. But the good thing is if the window is open, the defenders are back.

“I’ve said many times at the beginning of the season, I’m so, so happy with the squad we have.

“That’s not to say if there will be a chance in the market, this club has always shown that it will go for it. That’s what we also did with the goalkeeper who is not with us at the moment. We felt it was a chance for us to do it.

“This is what the club is known for and what these people like Richard (Hughes) and Michael Edwards are known for.

“We are mainly focused now on Newcastle and Everton and all these nine games that are coming up.

“But it’s normal we also have conversations about our squad and what can we expect. Can something change? Yes or no? What are the chances in the market?”
