Arsenal express interest in Wolves striker Matheus Cunha

The Gunners’ interest in the 25-year-old reportedly predated Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury

Arsenal have expressed interest in Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, but securing his signature during the transfer window could prove difficult as the Brazilian remains pivotal to Wolves’ fight for Premier League survival, according to The Telegraph.

The Gunners’ interest in the 25-year-old reportedly predated Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury, which is set to sideline him for “many weeks” following Arsenal’s match against Crystal Palace.

Adding to Mikel Arteta’s challenges, Raheem Sterling is also unavailable due to a knee problem, further limiting the manager’s attacking options.

Cunha joined Wolves from Atlético Madrid in 2023 for a fee of £44million after an initial loan spell.

His performances over the past three seasons have impressed Arsenal scouts.

During his debut Premier League campaign, he netted 14 goals in all competitions, and his form this season has been a rare bright spot for a struggling Wolves side.

Wolves have spent much of the season in the bottom three and are fighting to retain their top-flight status for an eighth consecutive season.

Given Cunha’s importance to their survival hopes, the club is highly unlikely to entertain offers for the forward in January.

The Brazilian has two years remaining on his current deal, but Wolves are keen to extend his contract to reflect his growing influence.

Since leaving Switzerland’s Sion, Cunha has developed his career in Germany with RB Leipzig and Hertha Berlin before moving to Spain with Atlético Madrid.

Despite Wolves’ reluctance to sell, Cunha’s performances have put him on the radar of several top clubs.

The Midlands side could face bids for the player in upcoming transfer windows, and regardless of their league status, Wolves would be in line to make a substantial profit on their 2023 investment.
