Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso to leave club next summer amid links with Real Madrid
Alonso, whose contract with the Bundesliga side runs until 2026, will depart at the end of the current season
Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is reportedly set to leave the club next summer, with strong links to both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
According to Eurosport, Alonso, whose contract with the Bundesliga side runs until 2026, will depart at the end of the current season.
The report suggests that all roads lead to Alonso joining Real Madrid next year, despite Carlo Ancelotti having 18 months remaining on his deal at the Santiago Bernabéu.
However, Alonso could also find himself at Bayern Munich if Vincent Kompany fails to meet expectations at the German giants this season.
Sources close to the situation claim thats Xabi Alonso has already informed several Leverkusen players of his decision to leave at the season’s end.
While much depends on Ancelotti’s future at Madrid, with the Italian’s position under scrutiny due to the team’s underperformance this season, Alonso’s move to Madrid could still be delayed until 2025.
Alonso, who famously rejected the opportunity to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, has made a name for himself in Leverkusen.
In the 2023/24 season, he guided the club to a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double, with their only loss of the campaign coming in the Europa League final to Atalanta.
However, this season has been less successful, with Leverkusen currently in fourth place in the league, nine points behind Bayern Munich after 10 matches.
