Cody Gakpo is reportedly close to signing a new Liverpool contract, with his current deal set to run until 2028.
Having joined the Reds midway through the 2022/23 season, the Dutch winger is expected to secure his first improved deal on Merseyside.
PSV Eindhoven journalist Rik Elfrink told Eindhovens Dagblad that Gakpo “is close to a new contract” and that “there’s a good chance he’ll sign a new contract soon.”
The move makes sense given Gakpo’s age – 26, entering his prime – and his status as Liverpool’s undisputed first-choice left winger following Luis Diaz’s departure.
Elfrink added that “Gakpo had options to move earlier this transfer window, but according to British sources, he is close to renewing his current contract.”
Currently, Gakpo reportedly earns £120,000 per week, similar to Federico Chiesa, who is just 18 months older and started 28 games fewer than Gakpo last season.
Earlier this summer, Gakpo was briefly linked with Bayern Munich, though the Bundesliga champions opted to sign his former teammate Diaz instead.
BILD reporter Christian Falk suggested at the time that Gakpo “could imagine signing a new contract at Liverpool” while noting that Bayern were “not quite sure yet whether they’re just being used as a pawn” in contract negotiations.
It appears that scenario was accurate. Having started Liverpool’s opening two Premier League fixtures, Gakpo is fully focused on helping the Reds retain their title.
For now, his main competition on the left is Rio Ngumoh, though that could shift if Alexander Isak were to join the club.
Should Isak arrive at Anfield, Hugo Ekitike could see more minutes out wide, with Isak likely to slot through the middle.
