Why Cole Palmer was unused substitute as Chelsea suffered Carabao Cup loss to Newcastle

Chelsea exited the competition in the round of 16

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca expressed that he felt there was no need to substitute Cole Palmer during the Blues’ 2-0 defeat to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Chelsea exited the competition in the round of 16, succumbing to Newcastle just days after defeating them at Stamford Bridge.

Despite being named as a substitute, the 22-year-old did not see any action as his team struggled, trailing by two goals.

Maresca explained his decision to leave Palmer out, saying: “Simply because I think Joao [Felix] and Christo [Nkunku] were doing very good.

“The reason why [we brought him] was in case we needed Cole but Joao and Christo were doing well so there was no need to change.”

Palmer’s omission may have deeper implications than what Maresca conveyed in his post-match press conference.

The Blues heavily rely on the young England star, necessitating careful management of his playing time as they enter a busy period.

Cole Palmer was also left out of Chelsea’s squad for the Conference League, indicating that he is being prioritized for Premier League action.

A significant match awaits Maresca’s side on Sunday, as Chelsea are set to face Manchester United at Old Trafford.

There is little doubt that Palmer will be involved in that game as the London club aims to secure a spot in the Premier League’s top four.

Palmer has meanwhile been shortlisted for the Premier League Player of the Month award for October, presenting him with the opportunity to claim the honor in consecutive months.

He previously won the Player of the Month award after scoring five goals in September, which followed his remarkable Goal of the Month in August for a stunning lob during our away victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After a series of impressive performances in October, including an assist for Noni Madueke in the match against Nottingham Forest and a winning goal against Newcastle United, Palmer now has the chance to become the first player to win back-to-back Premier League Player of the Month awards since Marcus Rashford achieved this feat in February 2023.
