David Coote expected to quit lucrative refereeing gig
The Premier League official has found himself at the centre of controversy
David Coote is reportedly planning to resign from his high-profile refereeing position amid mounting pressure following a leaked video scandal.
The Premier League official has found himself at the centre of controversy after a video surfaced online showing him using a derogatory term to refer to former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, calling him a “German c***.”
Although Coote has acknowledged responsibility for the video, he has stated that he does not remember the incident.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has already suspended Coote as part of their investigation, and the Football Association (FA) has launched a separate inquiry.
Reports suggest Coote could be charged with an “aggravated breach” of FA rules due to the discriminatory nature of the comment.
UEFA has also taken swift action by removing Coote from their match list for the upcoming international break.
According to sources from The Sun, Coote is expected to step down voluntarily before being formally dismissed, which would cost him a salary of approximately £100,000 per year.
The situation has sparked widespread discussion within the football community, with many calling for accountability and stricter conduct standards for officials at the highest level of the game.
A source quoted by the publication said: “He’s looking at more than a million quid down the drain there when you add it all up.”
PGMOL boss Howard Webb has already broken his silence.
Speaking earlier this week, he said: “We became aware of a video on social media that we are taking very seriously.
“We have instigated a full investigation.
“David Coote has been suspended pending the outcome.
“There’s not much more I can say at this stage.”
