Egypt handed major injury worry with Mohamed Salah set to undergo scan

Egypt have been handed a major injury concern after captain Mohamed Salah was forced off during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Iran.
The Liverpool winger, who will officially leave Anfield as a free agent on July 1, was replaced by Mostafa Zico in the 57th minute after appearing to pick up an injury.
Salah has been in impressive form at this summer’s World Cup, scoring three goals, including his 68th international strike in Egypt’s 3-1 victory over New Zealand.
The 34-year-old has played a key role in helping Egypt reach the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
However, doubts now surround his availability for next Friday’s clash with Australia after the Egyptian FA confirmed that the forward will undergo scans to determine the extent of the problem.
They said: “Hossam Hassan, the technical director of Egypt’s first national team, confirmed that Mohamed Salah, the team captain, complained of pain in his hamstring during the Iran match in the 2026 World Cup, which led to his withdrawal from the game in the second half.
“Hassan added that Ahmed Fotouh, Egypt’s left-back, also felt pain in his hamstring, while Mohamed Abdelmonem suffered a bruise to his ankle.
“The technical director of our national team noted that Salah, Fotouh, and Abdelmonem are scheduled to undergo X-rays and medical examinations under the supervision of Dr. Mohamed Aboul Ela, the team doctor, to check on their conditions and determine the treatment program for the trio’s recovery.”
Uncertainty also remains over Salah’s club future as he prepares to end his nine-year stay at Liverpool. His agent, Ramy Abbas, has dismissed reports claiming the Egyptian has already decided on his next club amid speculation linking him with a move to Turkey.
Mohamed Salah leaves Liverpool as one of the greatest players in the club’s history, having won an impressive collection of trophies since arriving from Roma in June 2017 under Jurgen Klopp.
His honours include two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
