Florian Wirtz expressed his delight after scoring his first Liverpool goal in Saturday afternoon’s 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.
The Reds’ playmaker opened his Premier League account when he struck from inside the box past José Sá in the first half, giving Liverpool a crucial advantage.
Wirtz’s goal came just a minute after Ryan Gravenberch had broken the deadlock, and the pair of quick-fire strikes ultimately proved decisive, despite Santiago Bueno pulling one back for the visitors after the interval.
Liverpool were made to work hard for the three points in the closing stages after Wolves reduced the deficit following the half-time break, but Arne Slot’s side held firm to secure another important win.
The No.7 had already registered his first league assist for the club in last weekend’s win over Tottenham Hotspur and followed that up in style by opening his goalscoring account.
Wirtz’s influential performance did not go unnoticed, with the German international voted Liverpoolfc.com’s Carlsberg Player of the Match by supporters after full-time.
“It was very nice,” Wirtz reflected to Premier League Productions post-match. “The feeling on the pitch with the fans around [the stadium]… I was very happy and I liked it!
“I was confident that I would score one day. Of course, I wanted to start scoring and assisting earlier, but it was like this. I had to accept it, but I just knew that it would come, and I just tried to keep going like that.”
“I think we played a brilliant first half and every time we lost the ball we got it directly back,” he continued.
“Everyone was working really hard, but then in the second half in the last 20 to 25 minutes we made it harder for ourselves and difficult. To be honest I cannot explain why. We have to talk about this in training because we have to change that.”
On moving to six games unbeaten and being back in the top four, he added: “That’s the way we want to do it, we want to be there, and we want to be top of the table.
“It’s not been an easy start for us, but I think in the last games we have been doing better and better and getting the points. We are just trying to win every game now and today we had the next three points, so it’s good.”
