Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard named new Coventry boss

Out of work since his interim stint at Chelsea ended in the 2022/23 season, Lampard now takes charge in the Championship

Frank Lampard has made his managerial return, being appointed as the new head coach of Coventry City.

Out of work since his interim stint at Chelsea ended in the 2022/23 season, Lampard now takes charge in the Championship.

The former Derby County boss, who led the Rams to the play-off final in 2019, replaces the widely admired Mark Robins in the Sky Blues dugout.

Coventry City owner and executive chairman Doug King said: “I am delighted that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as head coach. Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this League to be successful.

“His experiences thereafter at Chelsea and Everton will ensure he brings to our talented squad clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level that we as a club are striving to reach.”

Doug King made the controversial decision to sack Mark Robins on November 7, taking time to appoint Frank Lampard as his successor.

The former Chelsea and England midfielder will replace interim boss Rhys Carr, who has overseen the team in recent weeks.

Lampard will be unveiled at a press conference on Thursday afternoon, accompanied by his assistant coaches Joe Edwards and Chris Jones.

His first match in charge is set for Saturday when Coventry host Cardiff at the CBS Arena.

The 46-year-old faces an uphill battle, with fans still frustrated over Robins’ dismissal. Robins had guided Coventry to a play-off final and an FA Cup semi-final in the past two years.

Despite the unrest, King opted for Lampard as a high-profile replacement.

Coventry sit 17th in the Championship, just two points above the relegation zone, after a 2-0 loss to Burnley on Tuesday.

Lampard has been linked to multiple roles since leaving Chelsea 18 months ago, including talks with Burnley in the summer after Vincent Kompany’s move to Bayern Munich.

His managerial career began at Derby County, where he reached the play-off final before moving to Chelsea.

Subsequent spells at Everton and a brief interim role back at Stamford Bridge were less successful.
