Why Rio Ngumoha signed only three year deal at Liverpool

The winger, who turned 17 last month, has now officially committed to the club he joined from Chelsea in the summer of 2024

Liverpool have rewarded Rio Ngumoha for his rapid progress with his first professional contract.

The winger, who turned 17 last month, has now officially committed to the club he joined from Chelsea in the summer of 2024.

Ngumoha has quickly risen through the ranks since making his debut in a UEFA Youth League draw with AC Milan 12 months ago. He earned his first senior appearance in an FA Cup win over Accrington in January.

This summer, the former Chelsea prospect firmly established himself within the senior squad.

A highly productive pre-season under Arne Slot saw him score three times against Stoke City, Yokohama F. Marinos, and Athletic Club, before making his Premier League debut last month in the dramatic 3-2 victory at Newcastle United.

That night, Ngumoha became the youngest scorer in Liverpool’s history when he netted a 100th-minute winner at the age of 16 years and 361 days.

He made his first Champions League appearance in the 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid on September 17, and earned his first start of the season in Tuesday night’s 2-1 Carabao Cup triumph against Southampton.

Ngumoha’s rapid ascent has convinced Liverpool that he can be a senior option in Arne Slot’s squad, providing competition for Cody Gakpo on the left side of the attack.

He joins a star-studded frontline that includes Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, and Federico Chiesa.

Rio Ngumoha has signed a three-year deal at Anfield, in line with FIFA regulations, which limit contracts for players under 18 to this length.
