Harry Maguire set for Manchester United stay after revealing “positive” talks
The 31-year-old defender is nearing the end of his current contract, with just six months remaining
Harry Maguire appears likely to remain at Manchester United following what he described as “positive” discussions with club officials regarding his future.
The 31-year-old defender is nearing the end of his current contract, with just six months remaining.
Under the terms of his deal, Maguire would be free to negotiate with other clubs as early as next month.
However, United retain an option to extend his contract for an additional season, a clause that could play a pivotal role in the ongoing talks.
Providing an update after United’s weekend victory over Manchester City, Maguire expressed optimism about his future without confirming whether he would stay at Old Trafford.
He said: “Listen, I haven’t really thought about it. I’ve still got this year to go, with an option in their hands.
“But, yeah, talks are ongoing and all the signs are positive at the moment. The chat that I’m having is really positive.”
Should Harry Maguire sign a new deal at Manchester United, it would mark a significant reversal in fortunes for the England defender.
Once a mainstay in United’s backline, Maguire fell out of favor under former manager Erik ten Hag, even losing the captaincy.
He has actively sought a way out of Old Trafford in recent transfer windows. In the summer of 2023, he came close to joining West Ham, but the two clubs were unable to agree on a deal.
However, the arrival of new manager Ruben Amorim has breathed new life into Maguire’s United career.
The defender has seized his opportunities under Amorim, delivering a standout performance in the Red Devils’ surprise victory over Manchester City.
Amorim said: “[Harry] Maguire is perfect when you play with the three defenders. I think in the middle [he] is perfect.
“Then the way that the striker that they have [ Erling Haaland ] with the long balls, you need to be really strong and so was perfect for him. Not just Harry, all the guys, defend really well.”
“They were really focused and that is the key to play better. I think he did a great job and also his team-mates did a great job.”
