Ibrahima Konate set to leave Liverpool in summer

Konate’s current deal expires on June 30, 2026, and while his representatives have held ongoing discussions with the club over a possible extension, there has been “no breakthrough” so far

Ibrahima Konate’s contract talks with Liverpool have yet to make any meaningful progress, leaving the French defender on course to depart on a free transfer in the summer.

Konate’s current deal expires on June 30, 2026, and while his representatives have held ongoing discussions with the club over a possible extension, there has been “no breakthrough” so far. That update was reported by The Athletic’s David Ornstein on Tuesday.

The situation comes amid an update on Liverpool’s wider transfer plans, with the club expected to keep activity to a minimum in January before prioritising defensive reinforcements – particularly at centre-back – ahead of the new campaign.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both under contract until 2027, but uncertainty surrounding Konate’s future could still make it another busy off-season in terms of recruitment.

Talks between Liverpool and the player’s camp have been ongoing for several months, and the lack of progress is increasingly a cause for concern.

That said, Liverpool have been here before. Both Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah only concluded lengthy contract negotiations last season, eventually signing new deals in April.

Nevertheless, the current situation is far from ideal, with the club facing the prospect of losing another first-choice starter as 2026 approaches.

While Real Madrid are no longer believed to be interested in Ibrahima Konate, the France international would have no shortage of suitors should he decide to run down his contract and leave on a free transfer.

Liverpool’s priority remains tying the 25-year-old down to a new deal, but the club’s hierarchy will also be mindful of securing value for a player likely to demand elite-level wages.

Liverpool are understood to hold a long-standing interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, while Club Brugge’s Joel Ordóñez, Wolfsburg’s Konstantinos Koulierakis and Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande have also been linked.

The need to sign at least one centre-back this summer would only heighten the urgency of reaching a decision on Konate’s future.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will impose a deadline in negotiations with their Frenchman but with rival clubs monitoring Guehi’s situation, there is a growing sense that a final call may be required sooner rather than later.
