Jamie Carragher calls on Liverpool to sign new left-back in January

One area of concern for Liverpool is the left-back position, as Andy Robertson has been out of form

Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to sign a new left-back in January to provide support for club stalwart Andy Robertson, who he believes is “struggling.”

With Arne Slot’s team currently flying high at the top of both the Premier League and the Champions League, it remains to be seen whether the Reds will be active in the upcoming January transfer window.

However, some business could still take place.

One area of concern for Liverpool is the left-back position, as Robertson, 30, has been out of form.

The Scotland captain was sent off after just 17 minutes in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Fulham, and he has failed to hit his usual high standards this season.

The situation has reached a point where Carragher believes that Slot and his team must bring in a new player for the left-back position when the transfer window reopens.

“Robertson is having a tough time and it’s a very unforgiving position,” Carragher told Sky Sports on Monday night.

“[Against Fulham] He doesn’t look like he’s running back fully, he’s had a whack then gingerly goes to control the ball before getting a red card.

“He needs help. Liverpool haven’t got any back-up and it’s something they need to address in January.”

Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez has enjoyed an impressive season and is reportedly attracting interest from several top Premier League clubs.

Jamie Carragher believes the young left-back would be an ideal candidate to challenge Robertson for his place in the team.

He also highlighted Liverpool’s new sporting director, Richard Hughes, who previously played a key role in securing Kerkez’s move to Bournemouth.

He continued: “Kerkez has been a revelation at Bournemouth. The technical director who brought him to Bournemouth [Richard Hughes] is now the sporting director at Liverpool.

“Kerkez looks like a full back and he’s aggressive. He’s been superb since he came into the Premier League and is one to watch in the future whether he stays or moves on.”
