Jayden Danns saw his long-awaited return cut short by injury as Liverpool U21’s unbeaten Premier League 2 run ended with a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City U21.
The striker pulled up with a hamstring issue after 29 minutes at the Joie Stadium on Monday, in his first appearance since a serious injury in September while playing for Rob Page’s side.
City led on 15 minutes when Christian McFarlane’s cross was finished by Floyd Samba. Armin Pecsi made key saves, while Will Wright and Kieran Morrison went close.
After the break, Liverpool pushed for an equaliser, with Wright denied on the line and Tommy Pilling seeing a free-kick saved.
However, City sealed victory on 62 minutes as Isaiah Dada-Mascoll headed in a corner from Ryan McAidoo.
The result ends Liverpool’s 10-game unbeaten run and their hopes of finishing top, though a play-off spot is still secure.
Liverpool U21s head coach Rob Page said: “We’ll know more in 24 hours, but it was probably precautionary as well. He’s felt something, to what extent, we don’t know, but I think he’s done the sensible and right thing to do.
“He could have played on for the first half, but I think the sensible thing to do for his development now and for his future is for him to come off.”
