Mohamed Salah has downplayed Liverpool’s chances of being favourites for the 2025-26 Premier League title, despite their dramatic 4-2 victory over Bournemouth in the season opener.
The Egyptian forward admitted that one of their main rivals, Arsenal, may hold the upper hand in this year’s title race.
The Gunners, who have not lifted the Premier League trophy since their famous unbeaten campaign in 2004, have once again invested heavily in their squad, spending close to £200million during the summer transfer window.
Among their new arrivals is striker Viktor Gyökeres, seen as the final piece to bolster a team that finished second last season.
Salah, who was recently crowned PFA Players’ Player of the Year for a record third time, acknowledged Arsenal’s growing strength.
The 33-year-old enjoyed a remarkable 2024-25 campaign, scoring 29 goals and providing 18 assists in what was widely regarded as one of the greatest individual seasons in Premier League history.
Nevertheless, Liverpool remain determined to push for honours under new manager Arne Slot.
After their winning start against Bournemouth, the Reds travel to St. James’ Park to face Newcastle United on Monday.
They will then host Arsenal at Anfield the following weekend – a clash that could prove pivotal in setting the tone for the early title race.
During an interview at the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) awards on Tuesday night, Salah told presenter Cecil Thomas, who is an Arsenal supporter: “I think you have a great team this season as you did last season.
“So, you have really good chance. I think you are the favourite now because you players who have been together for five years.
“I can’t say I’ll wish you luck – hopefully we do it again.”
