With growing claims that Arne Slot will be backed as head coach this summer, reports of an approach for Xabi Alonso have again been downplayed.
Slot is on course to guide Liverpool to a Champions League place, with a top-five finish meeting the club’s minimum target for his second season.
However, concerns remain over performances, despite the 3-1 win against Crystal Palace, where Liverpool registered lower xG (1.14–2.26), fewer shots and fewer big chances.
The message from Merseyside is that Liverpool and Fenway Sports Group plan to stick with Slot heading into the summer.
This contradicts earlier reports from Germany linking the club with Alonso. According to Fabrizio Romano, no talks have taken place.
“Someone in Germany is even saying ‘it’s already done, Xabi Alonso is very close to Liverpool’, but at the moment I’m not aware of this,” Romano said on YouTube. “I’m not aware of Xabi Alonso already being in talks with Liverpool.
“Liverpool have not approached Xabi Alonso so far. If they do that in June or whenever, I will let you know, but at the moment I’m not aware of Liverpool making any approaches for Xabi Alonso.”
Still, Slot will undergo an internal review at the end of the season – a routine process, especially with just one year left on his contract and inconsistent results throughout 2025/26.
“The understanding is that at the end of the season there will be a review at Liverpool, involving everyone, to decide what is going to happen at the club in the future,” Romano continued.
“But at the moment, Arne Slot has always received support from the owners and from the club.
“That remains the case. At the moment Arne Slot is not receiving any message about the possibility of being fired at the end of the season.”
