Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy believes Arne Slot could be at risk of losing his job if he doesn’t make swift and significant changes to his team.
After winning the Premier League last season, Liverpool appeared to be making a major statement in the summer by spending £415million in the transfer window.
Some of the biggest names in European football arrived at Anfield, including Alexander Isak (£125m), Florian Wirtz (£116m) and Hugo Ekitike (£79m).
Not only were these Liverpool’s most expensive signings of the summer, they were the most expensive deals of the entire window.
It seemed Arne Slot was ready to build a squad of his own after inheriting Jurgen Klopp’s title-winning team.
However, 12 games into the new season, the project is yet to take shape.
Liverpool currently sit 11th in the Premier League, with six wins and six defeats.
They are already 11 points behind leaders Arsenal, following a poor run of results that most recently included a 3–0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.
With rumours circulating on social media about Slot’s job security, Murphy believes the manager faces some major decisions if he is to steady the ship.
On why Liverpool have been struggling this season, Murphy told Match of the Day: “A lot of the players have to look in the mirror because out of last season’s players, I’d say only [Dominik] Szoboszlai, [Ryan] Gravenberch, maybe [Andy] Robertson, when he’s come in, have even got near to the levels of last season and that’s not good enough.
“Okay, there’s lots of different reasons and theories, but a lot of it’s mentality, you know, because you’ve won something and maybe the comfort zone a little bit because physically they’re not at it.
“And only one of their new four or five top signings, Ekitike, has done well. So the players have to take some responsibility.
“Now what can Slot do? He’s got to make some huge decisions and that means leaving some big players out because back to basics is key.
“Defending better, working harder, being more physical, doing the hard yards — it sounds very basic stuff — but he’s got to pick his most physical 11 who he thinks are going to defend the best for him and start getting some points on the board, because if you keep losing games, he won’t be in a job.”
