Luke Chambers returns to Liverpool after suffering serious injury

Luke Chambers joined Wigan on a season-long loan deal in August

Liverpool defender Luke Chambers is set to return to the AXA Training Centre for treatment after suffering a serious injury while on loan at Wigan Athletic.

The 20-year-old has made a significant impact during his time with the Latics.

Chambers rejoined Wigan on a season-long loan in August, following a successful stint in the second half of the 2023-24 campaign.

The Preston-born left-back has been in outstanding form, contributing one goal and helping the team achieve six consecutive clean sheets.

However, Wigan have struggled since his departure, failing to secure a league victory since he sustained a back injury.

Manager Shaun Maloney confirmed the injury’s severity following the team’s 2-1 home loss to Mansfield Town on Tuesday night.

“Luke has a back injury, and it doesn’t look too good a prognosis,” Maloney said.

“We got that news yesterday, he’s going to be out for a fair period of time.

“You’re not going to see him back on the field for quite a while.

“It’s not weeks, it will be months…into the New Year for sure.

“He won’t need an operation, but he will go back to Liverpool tomorrow (Wednesday), they’ll take over his rehab.

“The specialists will get involved and they’ll take that over. It’s a real shame for him.

“I think there’s a bit of history behind it, over the last two or three years; it’s not something that’s just happened, or an impact injury.

“It’s such a shame because he was absolutely flying for us, he’s probably been our best player this season.”

Chambers, who joined Liverpool at the age of six, was included in Arne Slot’s first-team squad for the pre-season tour of the USA.

A UEFA European Under-19 Championship winner with England, he has made four senior appearances for the Reds.

Chambers also committed his future to the club by signing new contracts in both July 2022 and May 2023.
