Manchester United agree £71m deal to sign Premier League star

The agreement includes an initial £65 million, payable in four instalments

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Brentford to sign forward Bryan Mbeumo in a deal reportedly worth up to £71million, according to The Athletic.

The agreement includes an initial £65 million, payable in four instalments, plus up to £6million in performance-related bonuses.

The 25-year-old Cameroon international wanted a move to United over other interested clubs, and his transfer from Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium is now being finalised.

Manchester United intensified their efforts with a £65 million offer plus £5million in add-ons on Thursday.

Brentford had aimed for a fee higher than the £62.5million that United paid Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this window for Matheus Cunha. United’s initial bid of £45million plus £10million in add-ons was rejected, as was a second offer of £55million plus £7.5million in bonuses.

Mbeumo had informed both Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur, who were also interested, that he intended to join United if he were to move this summer.

Arsenal and Newcastle United had also shown interest in the winger, but Mbeumo was set on joining United.

The Cameroonian is expected to be United’s third signing of the summer, following the acquisitions of Matheus Cunha and teenage full-back Diego Leon, who arrived from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteño.

Mbeumo featured in all 38 Premier League games in the 2024-25 season, scoring 20 goals and providing eight assists as Brentford secured a 10th-place finish.

A product of the Troyes academy in France, Mbeumo joined Brentford in 2019 and was instrumental in the club’s promotion to the Premier League in 2021.

Over his Brentford career, he has made 242 appearances across all competitions, scoring 70 goals and registering 51 assists.
